| This work is dedicated to the my mother Eiko Sato whose quiet strength and love continues to be with me. I would also like to acknowledge the love and hospitality of my family in Japan without whom these photographs would not have been possible, especially Masae and Akira who were central to the series taken in Yamadera and Tono. The photographs were taken with a custom-built Siciliano camera using a 75mm Mamiya Press lens and 6x9 film back, and a 35mm Leica optical finder. As there is no through-the-lens focusing mechanism all photographs were taken with scale focusing and metered by hand. The Siciliano was built in an edition of 50 by Thomas Roma in Brooklyn, NY in the late 1970's. |
